It seems that no one was able to meet the deadline to present their Ignites on the BC town or city of their choice (well, except for a few people). Now, everyone has until next Tuesday for their presentation to be ready (Choir students will go first).  We will get to see Ethan and Erika present on Friday.

Block D - SS 10 > Getting deeper into the research for our cities

Work continued on the BC tour assignment. By Tuesday, everyone should have shared their notes on a Google Doc with Ms. Googs. Remember, the new due date is May 1.

Block D - SS 10> Igniting it.

It was decided that everyone will attempt to present an Ignite presentation (20 slides/15 secs each), which is approximately  5 minutes long. Below are a list of websites and videos to help with putting one together.

We continue to work on our BC city tour project. By now, everyone should be signed up on the document listing our city/town

At this point, everyone should have shared their document showing the information sources we have accessed so far along with notes that have been made.

Next day, there will be more talk about presentation formatting.

Block D - SS 20 > Continuing with Oregon

The talk on the Oregon territory continued as we looked at the varying attitudes between the Americans and the British who both desperately wanted the area. Americans focussed on using the argument for land for the increasing number of settlers. The British wanted to capitalize on the abundant resources in the area.

We will continue on with Vancouver Island and discussing key points.

Block D - SS 10 > Even I can fall behind . . . .

Okay, so this is all that happened this week.

We took some time to read the story in the text called,  Mountain of Grief, which helped to refresh our memory of the Chinese people's experience of working on the CPR.  After reviewing some key ideas, and many interruptions, we just got our feet wet with the Oregon territory.

We will carry on next class by debating the attitudes towards the Oregon Territory, comparing the British to the Americans.

We quickly reviewed the web activity on the Chinese Canadian community and shared the most interesting and surprising pieces.  From there, we continued on with getting to know our fair province by completing a fun quiz followed by a short mapping activity.

D - SS 10 > Discrimination against Chinese

The class focussed on a few primary documents regarding discrimination against the Chinese labourers in Canada. We reviewed the primary sources from last class on the work conditions and then moved on to government documents like the head tax.

The work that needs to be done next day:

- read #’s 4, 6,8, 12 on the changes to Policy document.
- note aspects of document, what is being said
- how are two documents (changes to policy & head tax document different > what changes can you note

We focused on discussing the history of the Chinese and their involvement as workers on the railway.  Most of the information analyzed was on the racism and discrimination faced by the Chinese.

The majority of the time was spent reviewing key people and places involved in the railway in addition to viewpoints by various political leaders. 

In small groups, you were given the question:  is the National Policy a positive or negative plan for Canada?  Finish this question at home in order to debate it in class.
