D - SS 10 > Looking deeper into the conflict in the Red River Valley

We tackled the history behind the Red River colony by looking into past conflict between the HBC and the Metis through analyzing the Battle of Seven Oaks. Through video, a  story (see link below) ,  and text reading, we saw the details and difference in perspective.

Story of the Battle of 7 Oaks,

Remember to find one online source on Louis Riel and make note of the Url.

  1. -What stuck with me was who won the Battle of Seven Oaks.
-Why did the HBC feel entitled to the land of the NWC and the Metis buffalo?

I understood why the Metis and Nor'wester were angry and worried about the Red River Settlement.

Why did the Hudson Bay Company burn the Fort and thought they wouldn't face any consequences? Another one was if the Metis and Nor'westers were angry how did they settle things between HBC before they merged together?

What stuck to me about the Battle of Seven Oaks, is that HBC stayed as a whole, even up to now.
One question that i have is about how did the NWC feel about joining HBC?

  4. What stuck with me: THE BATTLE LASTED FOR LESS THAN 20 FRICKEN MINUTES. (Also Semple looks a lot like Colonel Sanders in that painting)

What is a question I might have: Why does Semple look like Colonel Sanders?

  5. What stuck with me is that the battle lasted for less than 15 minutes! It just surprises me that a group of natives and a business man could kill a group of opposing leaders in less than 15 mins

A question that I have is: How did Selkirk die from getting sued too much?

  6. What stuck with me was that in the painting of the battle it looks like they skipped the insults and just started shooting.

  7. I think what stuck with me was that the Metis managed to defeat 20 men and only lose one of their own, i think that is quite the feat for them.

My question is what happened to the man the metis captured to get the colonies to surrender

  8. The thing that stuck with me for the battle of the 7 oaks was that the HBC claiming land that was never theirs in the first place. A question I still have is that who won for the struggle of power and hate. Like what happened after the story was over.

  9. Bernice Chen,
what stuck to me about the battle is how it only took 20 min long. This is surprising because of the key events leading up to the battle. I wonder what will happen to the Metis next?

  10. What struck me was how short the battle lasted, and how incompetent the Baymen must've been at fighting.

My question is: After they've been spooked by the Métis and the Nor'westers, what gave the Baymen the guts to try to take back the Red River Valley?

  11. what stuck with me about the story was how the battle started. it was kind of sad in a funny way. what I noticed in the painting was that both groups looked like they skipped the insults and just started shooting which is not how it went in the story.
